Monitoring has grown to a whole new level.
Comedian and actor Tracy Morgan got busted for a DUI back in November. The star of “30 Rock” will not get any jail time for this arrest but he gets the latest and greatest technology in tracking. Tracy gets to wear an Ankle Bracelet (or Anklet) to monitor his alcohol level.
Tracy needs to stay alcohol free for 90 days so the device called a SCRAM (Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring), it will test for the vapors every 30 minutes for 90 days.
If the devices detects any alcohol vapors then Morgan’s 90 days will start all over on his first offense. On the second offense he goes straight to jail for 30 days and has to complete 5 days of community service.
Now is where the questions begin???
1) Since when did DUI sentences get knocked down to 90 days?
2)He is over 21, he can drink. He just can’t drink and drive. How does testing for alcohol vapors every 30 minutes become fair? (Obviously some deal was made but his mistake was not drinking, it was driving drunk. )
3 and most important) What’s next? They have home arrest sentences which places a monitor to test for location at all times. Now they have a device to test VAPORS COMING OUT YOUR BODY? So again I ask you, what will be the next device for monitoring behavior remotely?
In the end I would choose a device over jail time also.
