Black Leaders Protest Against DL Hughley
Posted by KPopeBlack ministers along with several participants protested DL Hughley’s Juneteenth performance in Fort Worth Texas on Saturday.
The controversy regards DL Hughley’s recent appearance on the Jay Leno Show. Hughley referenced that Don Imus was wrong to call the women of Rutgers “hoes”, but later stated the ladies of Rutgers are some of the ugliest, nappy headed women he had ever seen.
The ministers are “fed up” and have had enough with the double standards. Whites are not allowed to get away with this behavior, so black performers should not be allowed to get away with it as well.
Pastor Kyev Tatum of Servant House Baptist Church said Imus is insulting and so is D.L. Hughley… “It’s not only that comment, he has a history of demeaning our community in such a way that it’s not funny anymore.”
The moral of the Story:
Watch what you say and where you say it. People are always listening, observing and will find a reason to “trip.”
C’mon man, he’s a comedian, thats what they do…take current events and make them into jokes. I understand the double standard, but there are a number of issues in the world, state and city to protest and focus more of your attention. Let it go…the Don Imus drama is OLD NEWS anyway.
HOW DO YOU FEEL? Would love to discuss…

I know D.L. Hughley is a “supossed” comedian, but I’m still looking for evidence of that claim. Does anyone out there actualy think he is funny? He’s definitely in the “most un-funny people on T.V.” category somewhere between Eddie Griffin and the entire House of Payne cast. If Imus was ignorant for calling those girls that, then Hughley was twice as ignorant and insensitive. I didn’t see the Jay Leno show, and I don’t know the context in which he said made the joke, but I’m sure if he wanted to make a joke about the Rutger’s girls, he could have said something people would have felt more comfortable laughing about, spin a joke off other physical attributes, like their atypical size or stregnth or something, but make it funny, not offensive— he could have said something funnier than nappy headed hoes–it’s just not funny!
I think D.L. is damn funny!! I agree with Kenny that most comedy is offensive. It may not be right, but it is what it is.
I listened to D.L. on the Tom Joyner show last week and he said some very insightful things. He said he did not agree with what Imus said, but that he had the right to say it. Then he backed up and “Black women’s hair does not agree with sweat, so yes those were some nappy headed hoes. There is not a black woman alive that is not a layup away from a press and curl.”
His point was more towards free speech. He said “if they start limiting free speech, ours will be the first to go.” I agree with that. He also said he did not believe Imus should be fired. He said ” what good does have a show removed that we did not even know existed in the first place.” Good point! Most of us had never heard of Imus prior to his comments.
Lastly, he talked about racism in America and said America is not nearly as progressive as it tries to make it seem. He said “If you really want to know how racist this country still is, he said to look at the internet. That is what people are saying and doing when no one is watching.” Being an avid blog reader I know that all too well. Go to some of the more popular blogs and read the comments when there is a post about black people. Very eye opening.
I have read your points and they are well taken, but I think you’re only defining the purpose of comedy with partiality. Comedy has a dual purpose it offends the easily offended or in many cases hypocrites because through its clever use of irony if defies social standards or beliefs which in turn makes it funny to the veiwers of this usually theatrical display. But in the case of D.L. Hughley, I still say he usually does not exercise humor in both facets…he is just crude, and being crass or foul mouthed doesn’t always equal irony, and it certainly doesn’t equate to humor either.
That being said, I must admit Brian, I am impressed on the argument behind Hughley’s Rutger veiws, it seems this time humor may have actaully been at play, I said I didn’t know the context in which he said the things he did, and though I still think he could’ve been funnier in doing so, this brings things into better lighting. I can’t say whether I agree with him totally on everything he said, I agree with the internet and racial comments, but have some speculations over the censoring of speech…I have to analyze his veiw points more, but I thank you for clarifying them and siting them in you reply.
I am Eddie Griffin, the protester who was put out of FW Bass Hall, not the young comedian… also, one of the religious leaders Mr. DL Hughley refers to as “clowns”. Hughley’s Jay Leno interview is not hard to find on the Internet.
While Mr. Hughley pleads his case for Freedom of Speech, we suggest that discretion is the better part of valor. If comedy is a matter of “timing”, he was ill-timed to pile on top of the Imus humiliation of the Rutgers women… He piled on like a second rapist.
I appreciate your comments and I will agree that the timing of Hughley’s comments were “off.” Of course in your case/profession, discretion is the better part of valor, but once again we are talking about a comedian here.
Comedians always push the envelope of social norms and are generally “rebels.” I am not supporting what DL Hughley has done, but to say he piled on like a second rapist is a little far fetched.
I agree with JustMyWord, wholeheartedly. DL Hughley puts blacks down more than most. He has a filthy mouth and a rudimentary liberal understanding of life. He’s vile and not that bright. Many of today’s black men are morally weak in public setting a poor example for young fatherless men and young girls. What other race puts their own people down like blacks and how many other races would take it and laugh at such unfunny material. Depraved and losing ground.
I am shocked that DL was given this opportunity with CNN. I used to be a fan; however, his disparaging remarks in defense of the Don Imus controversy regarding the Rutgers University Women’s Basketball Team was a disgrace. If Don Imus was repremanded than so should DL Hughley. Just because he happens to be African American and a comedian does not give him a pass.
DL is extremely ignorant. I am very surprised that he was given an opportunity to be on CNN. His entire show was basically trashing of African Americans. I guess this is suppose to be humor to non minorities. It was hard to watch his show. I cringed at some of his skits. DL is an uneducated fool. Is this what he had to do in order to line his own pockets? Very sad. DL, not all African Americans are the way you portray them. Stop with the self-hatred and have respect for people of color and stop with the negative stereotypes. You are NO Obama, you are an embarrassment! Black people are laughing at YOU!!!
oh my ,oh my..have just seen the cnn debut of mr. Hughley..emabarassing..infantile..and just plain wrong on so many levels ..Mr. Hughley is an ass..
Not to get religious on ya fam but like Judas, who betrayed Jesus for a purse of silver is representative of what we see with various black “media appointed” leaders and celebrities. Having worked in Public Relations for more than 12 plus years, I am witnessing more than ever before, this fight or flight attitude within the ranks of our, “media appointed” black brass. This group gained it’s wealth and status because they were willing to be sell outs. We were forced to just sit back and take it, while they feasted upon our misery. The media continues it’s attempt to “brand” us by giving exposure and forums to those that represent us least or reflect a “clown” like image, designed, to paint us as clowns. Obama, has raised our image so fast that this “niche” so many used for gain is closing. Like Judas, they will leave behind a legacy of betrayal. D.L. Hughley, Damon Wayans, Jesse Jackson, Tavis Smiley, and so many more are media fed brats and are soon becoming a fading breed. Let’s not take back the silver they were given. It’s theirs they earned it.
I am so sad and disappointed in CNN. I am black, and have come to regard CNN as one of the most respected cable news stations on television. Doesn’t anyone see how this undermines everything we are tying to unchain ourselves from? I too want black programming, but not at such a high cost. Comedy is good, but Minstrel is Minstrel, and I don’t care how much money DL is paid. Obama deserves better. I would expect this from FOX. Shame on you CNN

If Obama loses this race YOU will share the blame DL. You will be the new NADER!
