House of Pain

No that is not a misspelling. After watching an episode my house is in a state of pain. I just spent the last 10 minutes of my life debating if the show is misunderstood or just not a very good show. I didn’t see the need to waste anymore time talking about it. So I ended the conversation with one word “interesting.” And I’m not referring to the show.

Here’s my point…I think of a classic sitcom like Martin and I remember how the first episodes absolutely made your stomach hurt. Remember when Martin tried to get tough with Gina in that first episode and he told her to step? And then he started crying her name as she walked out “Gina! Gina! Gina! Gina!” How could you not tune back in that next Thursday to watch?

I bet if you were to stop reading this post right now and thought of your top 5 Martin episodes they would come to you in no time. Personally I would go with, in no particular order, 1. When they won the SUV (that scene with Otis and Pam may be one of the best in TV history). 2. When Gina killed Martin’s momma bird (”say bye to momma bird…classic!). 3. The Varnel Hill show (Martin and Tommy Davidson was clowning extra hard if you watch closely and when Martin cut in on Jodeci…if you don’t remember that then you are definitely lunchin). 4. When Martin reenacted the scene from New Jack City (if I have to recap that one just stop reading now). And 5. When Martin had to go to court for running the stop sign (you pick a scene).

Anyhow I’m sure Tyler Perry wasn’t trying to be Martin, but when I watched the show last night I felt like I was watching In The House meets Family Matters. I felt like they were trying too hard to get a message across. Hell at one point I thought one of the Wayans brothers were going to pop up in the corner of the screen and shout “MESSAGE!”

I don’t know, maybe I’m speaking out of turn, but I don’t see this as the next great Black sitcom.

I almost thought that was a typo, but I agree that spelling is more fitting…Sometimes, I think if people understood the meanings of words better, they’d have an easier time doing what they say and accomplishing goals, instead of just doing something off of a notion. I mean, “sitcom”, means situation comedy– so to break down that word would let you know it’s more based on rapidly unfolding situation, which are meant to be funny and entertaining. Although the background of the story should always be about a larger situation (like Martin for instance, with his love and dependency on Gina to keep him grounded and his tempermental mood swings about everyone else) but the smaller issues should be based on quick situations that should try to be as funny as possible (like the individual Martin episodes that were pointed out above–HILARIOUS). House of Payne unravels more like a play, which takes a different approach at getting a message across and is generally slower and more dramatic in doing so–every episode shouldn’t be so focused on the fact that their house burned down or that his wife is a crack head, it’s overkill, and “preachy”.(I didn’t even tune in last night-two wednesdays in a row was enough torture) For a sitcom, that equals BORING and those aren’t the right ingredients –I’m surprised that Perry didn’t know that. I mean if you’re a person with a desk job like me whose livelihood isn’t based upon keeping an audience of veiwers, and you like to blog for the purposes of getting out your negativity or clear your head– it doesn’t matter as much if you’re preachy–cause no one’s listening anyway, it’s more for you, not others— but if you’re a public figure, or trying to offer your artistic brand, presentation matters–that’s almost as important as the message itself. What I want to know is who in the world approved that pilot?! I think Tyler Perry should get some help from better writers, although I personally don’t think he’d ever bring the same type of humor as Martin did (cause to me Madea is not always that funny), it couldn’t hurt him at this point to rethink his writing strategy, cause as it stands, this is MAJORLY destroying his credibility.

i think tyler perry (madea) should should show up more often in order to save the show from being cancelled and also if he had better actors maybe the show wouldnt be so bad

First, I give credit to Tyler who is doing remarkable projects and opening doors for African American Actors/Actresses. He is courageous to launch a sitcom, which takes a lot of work and creative talent. On that note, I suggest he finds creative writers who have a track record of producing hits….Maybe he can talk with Martin and see who did his writing….I believe his show has potential…he just needs better writers.

lol… u brought me back. That reenactment of New Jack City left me crying!!! the Sophistocated Ladies is my all time fav along with the episode with David Alan Grier as the Rev. Leon Lonnie Love. when Martin’s mother was borrowing money to give to the church. That opening church scene was hilarious!!!!! House of Payne has nothing on Martin (no disrespect to Tyler Perry). It seems a little forced. And I agree that he should make more appearances to save the show.

You gotta admit - Tyler is seriously talented! Sure his TV show may need some help but I am so proud that someone finally decided to to challenge the perceptions of black media i.e. it has to be loaded with loose morals and what not. He is changing the way we black people view ourselves…for the BETTER…and I think that is GREAT!
