In 1945 Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. becomes first Black officer to command a U.S. Army Air Force Base. General Davis, the Air Force’s first Black General, compiled a long history of achievements and accomplishments in a career that began in the days of segregation. His combat record and that of the unit he led have been credited with playing a major role in prompting the integration of the armed services after World War II.

Also on this date:

1915 U.S. Supreme Court said “grandfather clauses” in the Oklahoma and Maryland constitutions violated the Fifteenth Amendment.

1964 Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner, three Civil Rights volunteer workers were arrested for speeding while attempting register Black voters across the country.  They were released by the police late that evening, and killed by the KKK.
