Magic Johnson will receive one of the National Civil Rights Museums Freedom Awards on October 23rd in Memphis Tenn., due to his work on promoting economic development, improved health care and educational opportunities in low-income urban neighborhoods and other underserved communities.

Johnson retired from the NBA after contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Since then he has campaigned for awareness and his Magic Johnson Foundation supports HIV/AIDS prevention and health care education.

Also being honored is historian John Hope Franklin and Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Congrats!
