In 1998, Joe Doby and Bullet Joe Rogan, both Negro League pitchers, were named to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.

Also on this date:

1865 Patrick Francis Healy, first Black awarded Ph.D. degree, passed final examination at Louvain in Belgium.
