The Marley’s Sue Universal and Verizon
Posted by KPopeThe Marley family is supposedly suing Universal and Verizon for using Bob’s iconic name, likeliness and image without permission.
Verizon and Universal entered an agreement that would allow customers to purchase exclusive ringtones of Bob Marley’s music.
According to Reuters, Universal Music Group-0the world largest music company, owns Island Records, the label through which Marley recorded most of his global hits, such as “One Love” and “I Shot The Sheriff.” His greatest hits compilation, “Legend,” is the biggest-selling reggae album of all time.
In a response, Universal responded:
“Specifically, we are offering Bob Marley ringtones through Verizon in accordance with the terms of a long-standing contract between Bob Marley and UMG.”
Sounds like a rumor to me. Not sure how the Marley’s can sue anyone unless they have exclusive rights to all material that was published through Island records. If they don’t have all the rights then its a wrap, the court case won’t last long at all.
