More than 250,000 persons participated in March on Washington demonstration, the largest civil rights demonstration in history on this date in 1963.

One year later there was a race riot in Philadelphia on this date in 1964.

Rev. Channing E. Philips of Washington, D.C., became first Black nominated for president by a major national party. Philips was nominated as favorite son candidate by District of Columbia delegation at Democratic convention in Chicago and received 671/2 votes on this date in 1968.

Paul Robeson’s scheduled singing appearance at the Lakeland picnic grounds in Westchester County, NY is disrupted by a riot instigated and provoked by whites angry at Robeson’s political stands on this date in 1949

Emmit Till was murdered on this date in 1955.

W. E. B. DuBois, editor author and civil rights leader died in Ghanaon this date in 1963.

Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia died on this date in 1975 at the age of 83. During his reign, Selassie’s main ambitions included the modernization of Ethiopia, international recognition for his nation, the abolishment of slavery, expanded eduacation and the elimination of foreign intervention.

Joseph Cinque and other captured Africans who took over the Amistad and killed it’s captain and most of it’s crew were arrested in Long Island, NY on this date in 1839.

Fayetteville State University was founded on this date in 1867.

The National Association of Colored Nurses was founded on this date in 1908

Edith Sampson is appointed as the first Black delegate to United Nations by President Harry S. Truman on this date in 1950

Edward Jones became the first Black man in America to graduate from college. He graduated  from Amherst College on this date in 1826.  He went on to earn his Masters in 1830.

James Stone, a light skinned fugitive slave passing for white, enlisted in the First Fight Artillery of Ohio on this day in 1861. His racial identity would not be known until his death nearly a year later.

National Negro Business League was founded on this date in 1900. Booker T. Washington was elected its first president. 

16 year old Yusef Hawkins was killed by more than 30 whites in the Bensonhurst, New York on this date in 1989.

The Public Dedication of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (NURFC) took place in Cincinnati, Ohio on this date in 2004.

Fisk university was established on this date in 1867.

Black Panther Party Co-founder Huey P. Newton was gunned down by a member of the Black Guerila Family drug ring on this date in 1989.

Nat Turner, a brilliant minister, led the first slave revolt of magnitude in Southampton County, Virginia on this day in 1831.

Harriet M. West was the first Black woman major in the Women’s Army Corps on this day in 1943.
