Michael Vick Is Still Ballin
Posted by BrianNot sure that playing football in jail is the smartest thing to do, but Michael Vick is doing just that to keep active in jail, although the money is not the same.
According the NY Daily News, Mike Vick is playing ball and has a job washing dishes at $.12 an hour. Is $.12 an hour legal in jail? An upside is the Vick has been in contact with Atlanta Falcon’s owner Arthur Blank through mail.
“”I just try to be supportive and as understanding as I can be,” Blank said. “He talks about the process he is going through and what he has learned, the lessons of life, how he’s going to come out a different person. He’s sorry he has affected so many people in a negative way — the league, our club, our fans. He feels awful about that. The letters sound quite sincere to me. From a mental standpoint, he sounds good.” I told Michael I’ll do whatever I can to be helpful to him personally. Nothing to do with the Atlanta Falcons,” Blank said. “He’s a human being and I would like to reach out and if I can be productive to him in some way, I would be happy to do that.
Although Vick will probably never play for the Falcon’s again, It’s pretty cool that Blank didn’t just turn his back on Vick and pretend like they were never good friends. Luckily when Vick plays football in the yard, he plays QB for both teams because that is not the best place to make everyone look like idiots. The consequences could be much worse than a 15 yard penalty. It takes a long time at $.12 an hour to pay someone off. That’s a lot of pots and pans!
Michael Vick Finally Catches A Break
Posted by BrianIf anybody needed a ball to bounce his way, it is Michael Vick. Well, he finally got a break yesterday as the Judge ruled that he can keep $16.25 million of the $20 million bonus that he received from the Atlanta Falcons.
A special master ruled in October the Falcons were entitled to recover the bonuses. The Falcons argued Vick used proceeds from a contract he signed in 2004 to finance his illicit activities. But U.S. District Judge David Doty of Minneapolis ruled that recovery of most of the bonus money by the Falcons would violate the NFL collective bargaining agreement. The agreement does not allow roster bonus money to be forfeited once it has been earned, the judge wrote.
I bet the judge knew that if he didn’t rule that way it was a lost cause because that money has already been spent. He was just saving everybody some time from a case where the Falcons would never get their money. There has to be better cases than suing a guy in jail.
Vick Cancels Interview with Tom Joyner
Posted by KPopeVick cancelled his appearance on the Tom Joyner morning show due to advice from his advisors.
According to the show’s website, “He really wants to do it, but all of his advisers are advising him not to, because everyone is taking what he says out of context,” Joyner said.
Vick is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 10. The NFL has suspended him indefinitely without pay until the end of his court case.
Mike Vick Pleads Guilty; Falcons QB Cops a Plea
Posted by ShakeerVick’s attorney says the Atlanta Falcons quarterback will plead guilty to a dogfighting conspiracy charge and probably faces jail time. Vick will enter a guilty plea to the felony conspiracy charge next Monday (8-27-07). “Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter. “
It is not yet known how much, if any time Vick will spend in jail. U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, who is presiding over the case, said he has the leeway to sentence Vick and his co-defendants as he deems fit and is not bound by the recommended sentences given to him by the prosecution.
In addition to the legal implications, Vick still will face punishment from the NFL. We may not see him again for 2-3 years. It’s a shame he got caught up in this mess. I know a lot of people will have differing opinions on this case, but it’s a shame that anybody could get caught up in something like this becasue they were trying to look out for their boys or trying to stay “real”. It’s another lesson learned that no matter how much money you have, you can still get caught up in the blackhole that is street life which is pulling so many Black males in.
The Real Story On Michael Vick
Posted by BrianI can’t take credit for this post as I recieved it in an e-mail forward, but it is dead on point. I find myself guilty of many of things mentioned in this post.
“All the breathless debates about Michael Vick are missing the point. The bigger issue has nothing to do with whether or not he deserves the right of due process, or whether NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should suspend him, or whether Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank should enable him or give him tough love. It’s not even about whether or not Nike should be launching another designer shoe with his name on it.
All of those are minor distractions from a much larger and far more significant issue. Here’s the real brainteaser that we need to get a handle on: How did someone like Michael Vick ever come to exist?
Are we really ready to have that conversation? Do we dare explore how a young man of such unique athletic gifts and such obvious on-field marketing appeal was allowed to turn into just another unfortunate mug shot and potential ruined life? How did that remarkable athlete get a $100 million contract with the Falcons, become Nike’s poster boy, rake in endorsements from airlines and cell phone companies, then find himself on the verge of blowing it all because of an incredible tale that seems to come straight out of some hardcore gangsta rap video?
We can save the “presumption of innocence” conversation for another time. As improbable as it might sound, technically, there’s a possibility that Vick actually could own a house, rent it out to his relatives and be dumb or naive enough to not know that there was a dog-fighting enterprise going on in the back yard. The U.S. Constitution provides Vick with the right and opportunity to prove that preposterous possibility to a jury of his peers.
One Of Vick’s Co-defendants Changes Plea To Guilty
Posted by RodOne of the co-defendants in the Michael Vick federal dogfighting case entered a guilty plea on Monday and pledged to fully cooperate with prosecutors. Tony Taylor, 34, of Hampton, Virginia, appeared in Richmond’s federal court to change his plea under the plea bargain. He will be sentenced December 14.
Taylor, along with Vick, 27, Purnell Peace, 35, of Virginia Beach, and Quanis Phillips, 28, of Atlanta, had pleaded not guilty Thursday before U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson. The trial for all four defendants is scheduled for November 26.
